Good move softblackstars! A Baby Dee thread was long over due Smile

Here's her bio from allmusic.com

Performance artist, songwriter, classically trained harpist, circus sideshow veteran, and transgender street legend Baby Dee was born in 1953 in Cleveland, OH. She spent ten years as music director and organist for a Catholic church in the Bronx before joining the circus as the bilateral hermaphrodite at Coney Island. This landed her a gig as the bandleader for performance art group the Bindlestiff Family Circus and a tour with the Kamikaze Freak Show in Europe. After moving back to New York City, she became a fixture in lower Manhattan with a street act on a high-rise tricycle with a concert harp. She recorded her first record, Little Window, on the Durtro label in 2000, a four-track EP in 2001, and her second full-length, the double-disc Love's Small Song, in 2002. Dee returned to Ohio during the latter record's recording, taking vows as a novitiate of the Little Sisters of Crabby Doom (a Cleveland-based order dedicated to the care of smelly old men), vows that she has since forsaken.

In Nantes she'll be playing with Current 93, but she's won't have a solo show. And she's trying to get some concerts in Spain (some good news for me)

Girls and Boys: we could arrange a meeting of justonestarers at some of her concerts...

I've orderded love's small songs, made for love and a live recording from Torino, that's all I could find. Little window and Book of songs for anne marie will be reissued this summer by durtro Smile

SoftBlackStar, thanks for starting a thread for Baby Dee.

I'm moving some comments from other threads over to this one.

Oh, and Baby Dee should appeal in some way to a great percentage of the core of the Antony fan-base. I can't decide which one of her records is the best, but Little Window is a great record. Love's Small Song and A Book Of Songs for Anne Marie as well. If you aren't already familiar with her work, you better hurry up. Baby Dee is unique. She plays some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, and lyrically she's way ahead of Antony. Oh, maybe i should mention that she is a former member of The Johnsons, so i suspect most of you already know her music.

The Robin's Tiny Throat

I woke up one morning heard a robin's song.
I asked that robin "Why do you sing?"

"It was a voice whose rhymes are worlds
That made my song for me
How could I not sing?"

I woke up on morning heard a robins song
I asked that robin "Who made your throat?"

"That same hand that flies a million dawns
Made my tiny throat and wrote my songs
How could I not sing?"

I built an arbor and I asked the vine
"How come you grow so tall?"

"If I can make it above the wall
That same hand that holds out hope for all
Will gild me in the morning sky
And though I cannot sing
That hand a gentle wind will bring
And make a rustling lullaby
For milky sleeping babes
How could I not grow?"

I woke up one morning and I asked the sky
"How can you bear such emptiness?"
"For that bright eye that looks out and smiles
And makes my night her day
What would I not bear?"

I woke up one morning and I heard her voice
She called me by my name
What would I not give
To be called her child
What would I not give
To be called her friend

I'm gonna wake up one morning I'm gonna see her face
Smiling down on me
That robin's song and that morning sky
Are all the hope I need
I don't know how and I don't know why
But I'm gonna wake up one morning and I'll see her face
Smiling Down on me
I'm gonna wake up one morning

I love Baby Dee. I have 'Love's Small Song.'

Saw her live during a three day festival in Toronto with Antony and Current 93 this past June.

I'd describe her as vaudevillean or tin pan alley, Gilbert and Sullivan go burlesque, or Tiny Tim meets Ivor Novello at an Edwardian dinner party. Shocked

Two songs I passionately love are 'So Bad' and 'When I Get Home.'

Her lyrics are sometimes a little raw, "Jesus got my mom in there and beat her up so bad," or whimsical, "So love could float her rosy little boat and the moon and the morning star could be such good friends," or maybe she's nature's poet: "From withered grass and broken branches you made my heart a robin's nest."

She has a penchant for robins and recorded a CD of them singing in her mom's back garden!

Regarding Dee's harp:

Did Baby Dee get her harp back? It got stolen, I remember reading somewhere.

I don't think she has it back yet. Very sad. Sad

Does anyone know if the harp was found?

I think one can order Baby Dee's albums from our very own bber (jnana) here too.

I'm getting obsessed here too... doh Did you read this on the Durtro homepage?

Baby Dee on Baby Dee:

Baby Dee is a child of light • A circus freak and a happy whore • How many seas would she make for you • If there were even half a chance • That one of them might find you by its shore • To cool your toes and make you laugh

She'd smile a sky from East to West • So wide that both horizons crack • And if some distant nations fall • Well, Isn't that just too bad! • For love has made her just like God • And God and Baby Dee are both quite mad

Baby Dee is in love • That's all there is to say about Baby Dee

Those pictures remind me of the artist who won Britain's Turner prize a few years back, whose name escapes me, but who likes to wear dresses like that,
